Afternoon Light

coffee in denver

Writer's picture: bluebonnet-bakesbluebonnet-bakes

I'm sitting here at a table on a patio of a coffee shop in denver colorado. the coffee back home wasn't enough for me this morning so I hopped a plane ride to the rocky mountain state. I have been to colorado many a time yet never actually denver. crazy I know, but I've only spent my time hiking through mountains, valleys and streams, in snow, rain or sunshine. I've never explored the urban life and what it had to offer. so, here I sit. I ordered a latte and a slice of coffee cake, pulled up a chair and began people watching. there is something so unique about each city in the u.s. I should know this being from texas. the contrast between auatin and dallas to san antonio, amarillo and fort worth is vast. if I didn't know, I wouldn't consider them related lol.

yet here we sit. I'm not sure what I'll do today, I only have one day, but I am eager to explore. I'll probably walk several miles, enjoy lunch at the market, and do some window shopping. maybe I'll even stumble upon a mountain or two. a park or trail. nevertheless, I am eager to see. let’s go explore!

I found my way to colorado university denver and walked along cherry creek for a few miles. it was quite refreshing. I explored old town denver, larimer square, took a photo as proof I was there then headed to a local community center. I went inside several shops, found loads of darling clothes, handmade goodies, coffee mugs and such, yet didn’t buy anything. after a while I was hungry for lunch. I googled searched a local gluten-free restaurant and decided to head that way. maps said it would take about 10 minutes to walk there… half an hour later I thought "this is a lot longer than I thought". turns out, I walked over 30 minutes in the opposite direction… this is why I am never in charge of directions. so, I rerouted and stopped at a local sandwich shop. it was quite delicious. I sat on their patio for about two hours just enjoying the sunshine and giving my legs a rest. after all, I hit 10 miles, burning over 1000 calories and hitting 20000 steps.

after walking off my lunch, I continued exploring the city… I went inside the mall there, explored the welcome back festival at the university, then headed into a community center where there were small shops, cafe’s, and a reading nook. I needed to charge my phone, so I sat down to write in my diary. I grabbed an ice latte (yes, my second coffee today, but hey, I’m going to have a long joinery home). I wrote a few pages in my diary - recounting my day so far, before finishing my latte and heading to union station. I walked around there, not much to show, but it was refreshing. I then boarded the train back to the airport before flying home.

I am proud of myself. I have a fear of traveling alone. I love traveling and I wanted to overcome that fear. chris told me, you just have to go once, then you’ll be fine. he was right. I’m packing for my next vacation tomorrow ;) for now, I’m heading home. denver has been good. see you next time.
